FINAL BLOG POST

END OF PROJECT REFLECTION

I can confidently say that over the past four weeks there has been a lot of learning curves. From figuring out how to get my plants to grow and protect the growth that they have had I have had to use all parts of my problem-solving brain. I have also improved my skills in the kitchen and become particularly more confidant in making bases for drinks with the herbs from the garden. One of our original goals was to be more creative in our recipes and cooking. I find that it is very easy to become accustomed to making the same things that you are comfortable with, so during these four weeks we wanted to challenge ourselves to use different ingredients and different methods than we have in the past. I feel like this goal was accomplished and most shown in the use of our herbs. Knowing that there we would need to buy some foods and products we wanted to support the local businesses when we could. Since COVID financially impacted the smaller shops the most we thought that this would generate a positive impact on our immediate community. We did this by visiting farmers' markets, local plant stores, and taking trips to local farms. Our final goal was to maintain gardens that would be able to continue to flourish after the project ends. With the adjustments that we learned about over these past weeks, I think that we will be able to do this for the rest of the summer!

This project was one that was slightly more logistically challenging than I would have anticipated. There were many small details that we did not realize would be important until after the fact, but knowing this, I would recommend this project or some variation to another student. I think that there is a lot to gain from something like this and it is usually a topic a lot of people don't have a lot of experience in. I also think that projects like these that are more open should be incorporated into the normal senior project plan. Being able to work with peers on something you have a shared passion for can lead to so much creativity and I feel will create a more lasting impact on their lives. Whether or not they continue to work on parts of the project past the project time frame being able to guide the project based on your own interests is a valuable experience.

Main adventures this week

The first large trip we embarked on was when we went to a restaurant called THE SOOP. This is a Korean restaurant that also grows a lot of its produce in the place, like a farm to table situation. The only difference about this place is that since it is in a very urban setting the way they grow food is different than the classic farm to table experience. They have a room with UV lights and a vertical system to grow their food.

The food that we ate was very delicious and I will definitely be going back in the future!

The second thing that we did was go to Colombia farms and pick strawberries. With these strawberries we made jam in bulk to give to our Cnc's. This process was slightly challenging because our normal techniques that we use with the smaller batches of jam did not work the same. But in the end we were able to make all the jars the we needed!
