Week 3: Lettuce-Like plants
This week we chose to focus on our lettuce plants. These were basically fully grown and we thought that they would be great to use! We knew that we could obviously make salads but we felt that that seemed to be slightly boring and we wanted to mix it up. After doing some research we then realized that lettuce is not very versatile in meals. It really just serves on purpose. However, I did grow some kale, and put that is some smoothies that I made which were pretty good.
The other plants in my garden are growing quite well. The mint plant is getting very large, and the leaves are also getting big. Next week I am planning on using the mint for many different things. I would like to make a mint simple syrup, and I think that I would also like to use it in some blended drinks like smoothies. The lavender is also growing some more the places that we cut off to use earlier are also growing quite a bit. So maybe in the next week or two, we will be able to use more lavender again. My strawberry plant is starting to have some very very light pink strawberries that are still slightly on the smaller size. I think that within the next two weeks they should be much more grown. I have found that as the strawberry plant gets bigger it is harder to water since I usually put the water at the base of the plant.
After the bunny situation last week, the lettuce plants that were attacked have made a crazy recovery. They grew quite a bit since last week, but I think that it was partly due to the ample amounts of sun that we recently had. I also think that since I watered those plants more than the other ones they were able to some repairs.
In terms of our goals this week, I am most proud of the creativity. I think that we were able to use our lettuce and kale plants slightly differently than we normally would. I also think that a big personal win was that I was able to slightly restore the bunny damage. This was a big moment in gardening for me that helped to accomplish our goals.
Some meals made with our lettuce-like plants
Next week I think that we will be able to go berry picking! Yay! I also think that we will be making more drinks and experimenting with using both our herbs and berries in meals and snacks.
It sounds like you are enjoying the resilience of your lettuce! You should have colorful salads all summer long. Speaking of colorful, what's in your smoothie? Do you enjoy tasting the kale, or do you mask it with other ingredients?
